The Higher Learning Program | Local And Global Travel | News And Events

Each summer students were actively engaged in thinking and doing as they developed various 21st century skills within the context of a core curricular theme. The Higher Learning program was structured to build on knowledge from previous summers as well as accommodate new students and single session participants.

The themes for 2011-2014 were:

Economics and Entrepreneurship | 2011

Students learned about the world of business and the economic system locally and globally. They learned about business related concepts, money management and saving, proposal writing, and the process of starting a business. They also met local entrepreneurs and proposed a business of their own. Students also participated in Common Ground on the Hill's Traditions Weeks, a two week festival of artistic courses and performances.

Food, Fitness, and the Environment | 2012

Students learned about the connection between the environment, sustainable living, food, health and wellness. Students also participated in Common Ground on the Hill's Traditions Weeks, a two week festival of artistic courses and performances.

Media and Pop Culture | 2013

Students investigated different forms of media (movies, music and more), how they influence what and how we think, and media’s impact on cultural trends and fads.  In addition, our youth participated in Common Ground on the Hill’s Tradition’s Weeks, a two week conference festival of creative and artistic courses and performances held on the McDaniel College campus.

World Cultures and Traditions | 2014

Summer Session II

Higher Learning high school students had the opportunity to travel internationally to a specific country. While there, they studied the language, culture and challenges of the nation's people, visited with change agents, and made links between social problems and solutions in that country and their own communities. Our 2011 destination was Mexico, our 2012 destination was Nicaragua, and our 2013 destination was Morocco!
